The FAMU College of Pharmacy is seeking a junior level postdoctoral fellow with expertise in cellular techniques to join the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI), Center for Nanomedicine.

The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in a variety of interdisciplinary research activities, including the development of HHV (low-level biohazard) cell-culture models, QSPR/QSAR and drug cellular delivery, RT-PCR baseline and effect assays, protein and drug target purification, LC-MS assays and peptide fragment ID, and the provision of technical expertise in design and implementation of protocols and ongoing assistance during pharmacology and pharmaceutics experiments. Independence in research, excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills, and energetic team work spirit are expected.

Recent Ph.D graduates in Immunology, Virology, Biology, Pharmacology, or Biochemistry preferred. Other degrees with appropriate experience will be considered.

A PhD studentship is available to study helminth modulation of allergic responses in the Inflammation and Immunity Research group in Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. The Inflammation and Immunity Research team is based in well-equipped laboratories in the Institute of Molecular Medicine, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin. The Institute of Molecular Medicine is a new state-of-the-art facility devoted to basic and translational research.

The project will involve investigation of the immunological mechanism that helminths use to suppress allergic inflammation (Fallon and Mangan, Nature Rev Immunol 2007). The student will focus on characterizing helminth immune modulating molecules and analysis of their function (Smith et al., J Exp Med 2005; Fallon and Alcami, Trends Immunol 2006). Applicants should have experience in basic molecular biology or cell biology.

The studentship is funded for 3 years by Science Foundation Ireland commencing October 2008. The closing date for applications is Friday, 8th August.

Title: Extension of the saliency maps to video
Under natural viewing conditions (no tasks assigned to viewers) humans tend to fixate on specific parts of an image that are of interest to them naturally. These regions carry most of the useful information needed for our interpretation of the scenes we encounter in our daily life activities. Therefore, numerous applications in the field of engineering, marketing and art can benefit from understanding the human visual attention mechanisms, such as visual media quality evaluation, advertisement design, graphical user interface design, etc. .

Several models are proposed in the literature for finding visually important regions in still images, based on the notion of saliency. Basically, a saliency map is the map of regions which are more prominent than others in terms of low level image properties such as intensity, color and orientation. This could be a very crude and simplistic way of approximating the human visual attention mechanisms; since it is known that familiar objects and especially faces present in an image are strong factors in drawing our attention to certain regions of an image.

This was the motivation for NCRL’ work on including face detection as an integral part of the new attention model Mr. Puneet Sharma has been working on for his MSc thesis at NCRL. His work on the automatic computation of saliency maps using low-level features such as intensity, color and orientation combined with high-level features was very promising and generated couple of publications. The objective of this research was to understand the factors that influence the saliency and gaze maps and to modify the saliency map extraction algorithm in order to make the obtained saliency maps more similar to the experimental gaze maps. Puneet has shown that we can achieve around 30% on average for the set of images used in the correlation between the automatically computed saliency maps and the experimentally generated gaze maps based on the new model.

An obvious continuation of this work is to extend this model to analyze video content. A straight forward way of doing that is by including a motion analysis module in the modified model. Dr. Marco Carli worked on a related problem, where he analyzed video content for the automatic evaluation of the perceived video quality. In his work he did not investigate in depth the use of low-level features such as color and did not use high-level objects detection as we did for the faces. He did however focus on motion information analysis and their contribution to the saliency of certain objects or regions in video. Therefore, a combination of both NCRL’ model with the face detection module and Dr. Carlis’ motion information processing would create a better modeling of the HVS attention mechanisms.

This PostDoc will be funded by the University of Saint-Etienne (France).

The candidate selected will work in the Laboratory Hubert Curien at Saint Etienne (France) under the supervision of Professor Alain Trémeau and at Gjovik (Norway) under the supervision of Dr. Faouzi Alaya Cheikh (http://www.ansatt.hig.no/faouzic/ ).

The PhD research project will concentrate upon the development of the additive layer manufacturing (ALM) systems, processes and methodologies needed to deliver novel 3D structural or microstructural geometries which can exhibit exhibiting extreme or unusual mechanical properties such as high strength, low density, extreme damage tolerance. The emerging additive layer manufacturing technologies included selective laser sintering, selective laser melting, laser consolidation and electron beam melting will be investigated.

The project is jointly funded by UK Great West Research and EADS (Airbus UK). EADS is a global manufacturer of aerospace, spacecraft and defence products and a leading institute to develop/implement ALM technologies to produce innovative high value and high performance aerospace components. The EADS has supported over £ 600 K funding to several research projects and PhD studentships in the area of ALM in the University of Exeter. The EADS will also provide expertise, facilities, materials support to this PhD research project. The student will interact with researchers and PhD students in the research group as well as engineers in the EADS to develop advance material and manufacturing technologies.

The studentship covers UK/EU rate tuition fees (£3,500 pa) and provides a tax-free stipend for the three-year duration of the project starting at £13, 500 pa. It starts on October 2008.

The EIPRS and LTUFRRS awards are open to international students who are seeking to undertake a higher degree by research at a Master’s or PhD level.

Both scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and are designed to cover tuition fees for a period of two years for a Master’s by Research degree and three years for a Doctoral (PhD) degree.

The closing date for these scholarships is 30 September for students who wish to begin their studies the following year.

We have a PhD scholarship available to work on Polymer Nanocomposites in the Department of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering.

The project, which is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency in Ireland, aims to enhance the toughness of recycled plastics using nanoclays and study toughening mechanisms of clay in polymers. 3. PROSES DAN PROSEDUR LAMARAN

a. Lakukan registrasi lamaran melalui situs http://rekrutmen.pln.co.id:8080. Saat pengisian agar dipastikan untuk mengisi formulir dengan benar dan lengkap karena pelamar hanya bisa mengisi formulir satu kali dan tidak dapat diubah setelah menekan tombol Daftar.

b. Kesalahan pengisian sehingga mengakibatkan pelamar tidak lolos pada tahap registrasi ini menjadi tanggung jawab masing-masing pelamar dan pelamar tidak berhak untuk mengikuti tahap berikutnya.

c. Setelah tombol Daftar di klik, akan muncul halaman untuk mencetak kelengkapan berkas lamaran bagi pelamar yang dinyatakan lolos. Berkas ini diperlukan pada tahap selanjutnya (Verifikasi Dokumen). Pelamar yang tidak lolos/gugur tidak bisa melanjutkan ke tahap berikutnya.

d. Cetak kelengkapan berkas lamaran tersebut, yaitu:

1. Surat Lamaran.

2. Daftar Riwayat Hidup.

3. Surat Pernyataan tentang bersedia ditempatkan di Unit dan Wilayah Kerja PT PLN (Persero) di seluruh Indonesia dan tidak terlibat penyalahgunaan narkoba.

e. Isi dan tanda tangani seluruh berkas lamaran tersebut di atas. Khusus untuk Surat Pernyataan, agar ditandatangani di atas materai Rp. 6.000,00.

f. Lengkapi berkas lamaran dengan seluruh dokumen pendukung yang dipersyaratkan, yaitu:

1. Surat Keterangan sehat dan tidak buta warna;

2. Foto kopi akte/surat kelahiran

3. Foto kopi ijazah terakhir atau surat keterangan lulus yang dilegalisir

4. Foto kopi transkrip nilai yang dilegalisir

5. Foto kopi KTP yang masih berlaku

6. Pasfoto berwarna terbaru ukuran 4X6 sebanyak 3 (tiga) lembar

g. Masukkan semua berkas lamaran dan dokumen pendukung ke dalam satu map untuk diserahkan pada saat verifikasi dokumen. Waktu dan tempat verifikasi dokumen akan diberitahukan sewaktu-waktu melalui e-mail atau melalui website PT PLN (Persero).

h. Apabila pada saat verifikasi dokumen ada ketidak sesuaian antara dokumen dan data pelamar yang diisikan pada formulir Registrasi Online, maka pendaftar dinyatakan tidak lolos atau gugur.

i. Pelamar yang tidak lolos seleksi Registrasi Online, tidak perlu menyerahkan dokumen untuk verifikasi.

4. PERSIAPAN SEBELUM MENGAJUKAN LAMARAN

Untuk menghemat waktu akses dan mengurangi kesalahan data pada saat pelamar mengisi formulir di Registrasi Online, pelamar dihimbau untuk mempersiapkan seluruh data dan dokumen pendukung yang diperlukan. Pelamar dapat juga memasukkan file scan pas foto dengan besar file maksimal 200 Kb.

5. LAIN – LAIN.

a. Tes/Seleksi bersifat nasional untuk seluruh lokasi tes, dilaksanakan dengan metoda dan ketentuan / persyaratan yang sama.

Registrasi online harus disertai dengan pengiriman berkas lamaran yang disampaikan kepada Panitia Penerimaan CPNS Deplu Tahun Anggaran 2008.

IV. TAHAPAN DAN JADWAL SELEKSI

Seleksi penerimaan PDK, BPKRT dan PK dilakukan dengan tahapan-tahapan sebagai berikut:
1. Seleksi Administratif;

Ujian Tulis Substansi dalam Bahasa Indonesia dan Inggris (meliputi masalah nasional, internasional dan pengetahuan umum) dijadwalkan akan dilaksanakan pada tanggal 6 September 2008 (PDK) dan 7 September 2008 (BPKRT dan PK). Tempat pelaksanaan ujian akan ditentukan kemudian;
3.

Ujian Kemampuan/Penguasaan Bahasa Inggris atau Bahasa Asing Lainnya (Arab, China, Inggris, Jepang, Perancis, Rusia, dan Spanyol) berdasarkan pilihan peserta, dijadwalkan akan dilaksanakan pada awal bulan Oktober 2008. Tempat pelaksanaan ujian akan ditentukan kemudian;
4.

Tes Pemeriksaan Psikologi dan Wawancara Substansi serta Tes Penguasaan Teknologi Informasi/Komputer dijadwalkan akan dilaksanakan pada pertengahan bulan Oktober 2008. Tempat pelaksanaan ujian akan ditentukan kemudian;
5.

Peserta yang lulus pada setiap tahapan ujian akan diumumkan melalui website Deplu www.deplu.go.id.
6. Seleksi dilakukan dengan sistem gugur dan keputusan Panitia tidak dapat diganggu gugat.

V.PENGUMUMAN HASIL SELEKSI ADMINISTRATIF DAN PENGAMBILAN KARTU TANDA PESERTA UJIAN

1.

Hanya Peserta yang telah melakukan registrasi online dan memenuhi seluruh persyaratan untuk melamar/persyaratan pendaftaran, yang akan diloloskan dalam tahapan Seleksi Administratif. Hasil Seleksi Administratif dijadwalkan akan diumumkan pada tanggal 23 Agustus 2008 melalui website Deplu www.deplu.go.id.

Pelamar yang telah dinyatakan lolos tahapan Seleksi Administratif diwajibkan untuk mengambil Kartu Tanda Peserta Ujian sebagai syarat mengikuti Ujian Tulis Substansi.
3.

Kartu Tanda Peserta Ujian harus diambil sendiri oleh peserta ujian di Pusdiklat Deplu, Jalan Sisingamangaraja No. 73, Jakarta Selatan, dengan menunjukkan kartu identitas diri. Apabila Peserta mewakilkan pengambilan Kartu Tanda Peserta Ujian kepada pihak ketiga, maka diperlukan Surat Kuasa bermeterai dengan menunjukkan kartu identitas diri Peserta dan Penerima Kuasa, serta menyerahkan fotokopi kartu identitas diri dimaksud.

The researcher will develop a multi-hierarchical sensorimotor representation

representation will be implemented and tested in a (virtual) mobile agent,

Applications are invited for a fully funded three-year full-time research studentship leading to a PhD. This studentship is fully funded by the University of Huddersfield and is open to UK, EU and overseas candidates. The studentship offers a stipend of £10,000.00 tax-free per year as well as payment of tuition fees. The successful candidate will work on a research project in the field of “Robotic Abrasive Finishing Technology Development” under the supervision of Dr. Xun Chen in the Centre for Precision Technologies - a world renowned centre of precision engineering.

The project will develop a new generation abrasive finishing technology which will combine both advantages of grinding and polishing to simultaneously achieve high efficiency materials removal as grinding and excellent surface quality as polishing. The successful candidate will work closely with industrial partners to apply the new techniques to aerospace, energy and biomedicine productions

The candidates should have a good degree in mechanical manufacturing engineering, materials science, physics or other related disciplines. The candidate with work experience in machining process monitoring and control, robotics and artificial intelligence will be an advantage. We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated individuals with relevant background to work in our multidiscipline team.

of Cognitive and Motor Abilities Using Information Technologies*

The position is available from 01 August 2008 until 31 December 2009
(extension is possible) and are under condition of job release.

The goal of the project SHARE-it is to develop a scalable, adaptive system
of add-ons to sensor and assistive technology so that they can be modularly
integrated into an intelligent home environment to enhance the individual’s
autonomy. The system will be designed to inform and assist the user and
his/her caregivers through monitoring and mobility help. Thus, we plan to
contribute to the development of the next generation of assistive devices
for older persons or people with disabilities so that they can be
self-dependent as long as possible. We focus on add-ons to be compatible
with existing technologies and to achieve an easier integration into
existing systems. We also aim at adaptive systems as transparent, and
consequently, easy to use to the person as possible. Scalability is meant to
include or remove devices from the system in a simple, intuitive way. The
focus is the development of an adaptive biosensor-based module that measures
biometric data, learn to classify them in order to conclude about changes in
affectives states like stress.

*Biosensor-based assistance
module *
The applicant will develop an adaptive biosensor-based assistance module.
First typical cognitive, sensory, and motor deficits in a target population
have to be assessed and have to be represented in a knowledge base. Second
online information will be received from a biosensor module sensitive to the
emotional and attentive states of the user. Based on both types of
information a profile of the user will be generated, continuously updated
and used for the adaptive user support. A platform for this assistance
module will be an intelligent walker and an autonomous wheelchair developed
in SHARE-it.
Practical experience in a number of the following areas is desired:

- software design and development
- signal processing
- multi-sensor user activity profiles/ multisensory information
processing
- processing of biometrical and physiological data
- knowledge-based systems and uncertainty management

Additional knowledge that would be appreciated:

- interdisciplinary background
- experience with international research projects
- interest in psychological/medical applications

The successful applicant of the position is expected to autonomously
communicate and interact with the European cooperation partners that jointly
develop the SHARE-it modules and platforms. The requisites for the position
is a graduation in a relevant area or a master / diploma in computer science
as well as interest in basic and applied research, and/or experience in a
similar project field.

The Argonne National Laboratory Named Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

Each year Argonne offers these special postdoctoral fellowships
to be awarded internationally on an annual basis to outstanding
doctoral scientists and engineers who are at early points in promising
careers. The fellowships are named after scientific and technical
luminaries who have been associated with the laboratory, its
predecessors and the University of Chicago since the 1940s.

Fellowship recipients will be assigned according to his or her
scientific or technical discipline.

2009 Argonne Named Fellowships
Candidates for the Argonne National Laboratory Named Fellowships must
display superb ability in scientific or engineering research and must
show definite promise of becoming outstanding leaders in the research
they pursue.

Fellowships are awarded for a one-year term, with possible renewal up
to three years. The 2009 Fellowship carries a stipend of $72,000
minimum per annum with an additional allocation of up to $20,000 per
year for research support and travel. The Fellows, who will be
competitively selected by a special fellowship committee, are given
the freedom of associating with Argonne scientists in a research area
of common interest.
