PhD in Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences

PhD in Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences-MPI Leipzig
Dear Colleagues,

we would like to invite to apply for an open PhD position at the Max
Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig,
Germany. The ideal applicant would have experience in fMRI/MRI data
evaluation (e.g. with *SPM*) and also knowledge in working with *Matlab*.

The focus of our multi-disciplinary research group is on translational
approaches to investigate the neural correlates of cognitive and
behavioral dysfunctions in neurodegenerative disorders by applying
voxel-based morphometry (VBM). More specifically, we want to use
clinical (comprehensive neuropsychological) data from a large patient
group of the Day Clinic of Cognitive Neurology at the University of
Leipzig and relate it to atrophy and decreases in glucose utilization
(as measured by MRI and FDG-PET). The main focus of the project is
placing dementia in a framework of cognitive neuroscience. Findings
might be embedded into future behavioral and/or functional imaging
studies.

Candidates with a background in medicine, psychology or a related
field should be interested in clinical neuroscience, neuroplasticity,
as well as in higher cognitive function and brain imaging. The
successful candidate will be enthusiastic and have a strong interest
in this exciting research area.

A background in MRI analysis techniques (SPM, Matlab etc.) and good
statistical skills would be of advantage. The Max Planck Institute in
Leipzig offers an excellent multi-disciplinary and interactive
research environment with access to excellent research facilities (3T
and 7T research MRI scanners, MEG, EEG, NIRS and TMS devices). The
candidate will profit from the neuropsychological expertise of the Day
Clinic of Cognitive Neurology that is tightly affiliated to the Max
Planck Institute. The position is funded for maximally 3 years from
now and will be held open until suitable candidates have been found.

In order to increase the proportion of female staff members, female
scientists are particularly encouraged. Disabled applicants are
preferred if qualification is equal.

To apply for the position, please send in PDF or other electronic form:
1) application letter
2) cv
3) diploma/master certificate
4) table of contents and introduction of diploma/master thesis
5) school exam certificate
6) names of 2 referees (with telephone numbers)

Looking forward nice applications

PhD studentship in Travel Behavior

Quality of Life and Travel Complexity in the Changing Urban Environment
(In collaboration with MRC-McLean Hazel Ltd, an Edinburgh-based
transport consultancy)

This PhD studentship will use complex secondary datasets to explore
how travel patterns and behaviour (including commuting and other
trips) have changed over time in urban Britain. The project will study
the effect of demographic restructuring, including the growth of more
single person households, on travel patterns, as well as geographical
variations in travel behaviour between cities, towns and rural areas
in Britain. Of particular interest will be the links between travel
behaviour and quality of life, including health, housing, social
inclusion and general well-being. It is hypothesised that because of
demographic and societal restructuring travel behaviour is becoming
more complex, and transport policy therefore much more interdependent
with a range of urban policy areas. By unpacking the explicit links
between transport and other aspects of quality of urban life, more
efficacious urban policies can be defined, implemented and evaluated.

[University Supervisors: Paul Boyle and Maarten van Ham]

The successful applicant will join the School’s Population, Health and
Welfare Research Group, and will also play an active role in the

provides a supportive environment for postgraduate study. The

forefront of the discipline.
