Scholarships for Women in 2009: AARP Foundation

The AARP Foundation announced a call for entries to its third annual Women’s Scholarship Program.
The scholarships will provide funds to women 40 years and older who are seeking new job skills, training and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families.

To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must:

- Be female, and 40 years or older as of March 31, 2009
- Be able to demonstrate financial need
- Be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary school or training program within 6 months of the scholarship award date

Priority consideration is given to women in three categories: women raising children of another family member, such as grandparents raising grandchildren, or those raising siblings or nieces/nephews; women who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time; and women in dead end jobs, those with no opportunity for advancement, low pay and lacking either health or retirement benefits.

Scholarships may be used for any course of study at a public or private secondary school, including community colleges, technical schools and four-year universities. Funds are payable to the institution and may be used to pay for tuition, fees and books.

Interested applicants can submit their application online beginning February 3 at www.aarpfoundationwlc.org. The application process closes March 31, and scholarships will be awarded in the early summer.

Scholarship winners will be chosen by an independent selection committee established by the AARP Foundation. They will be cho-sen on the basis of financial need, personal circumstances and achievements, educational goals and the likely impact of the scholarship on their lives and their families and communities. The Foundation will award up to 100 scholarship awards ranging from $500 to $5,000, depending on financial need and the cost of the education or training program.

“The AARP Foundation is pleased to be offering the Women’s Scholarship Program again this year,” said Michigan State Director Steve Gools. “AARP Foundation is committed to elevating opportunities for women. Since its beginning, the program has provided valuable resources that enabled more nearly 350 deserving women to have access to the educational tools to advance their professional goals.”

While many individuals benefit from the work of the AARP Foundation, research shows that women are disproportionately at risk of having insufficient resources in the second half of their lives due to lower earning and different work patterns.

The AARP Foundation first announced the Women’s Scholarship Program in August of 2007 to help women 40 years and older overcome financial and employment barriers by allowing them to participate in education and training opportunities they could otherwise not afford.

The scholarship program is made possible by the AARP Foundation with support from the AARP Foundation Women’s Leadership Circle. Scholarships are available to eligible individuals with moderate to lower incomes and limited financial resources.

PhD Scholarships in Bayesian Computer Modeling and Visualization of Virus Phylogegraphy

Two PhD scholarships are available in the Computational Evolution Group at the University of Auckland under the supervision of Dr Alexei Drummond, co-founder of the BEAST software package for Bayesian evolutionary analysis.
The successful candidates will be involved in developing a Bayesian unification of geographical population dynamics and phylogenetics with a focus on human pathogenic viruses.

Current phylogenetic models provide inferences about genetic variation, however this research will focus on the roles of landscape, geography, dispersal and migration, in shaping (viral) genetic histories. The successful candidates will work on two novel classes of tractable phylogenetic models that explicitly include the spatial distribution of samples and the geographic features of surrounding habitats. While the primary focus of the research will be on viral pathogens, the proposed work will have the potential to establish a new foundation for phylogeographic modelling in general. Besides developing ethodology, the successful candidates will be involved in developing a new version of the BEAST software to include both phylogeographical modelling and visualization.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with Dr Marc Suchard?s research group in UCLA and the successful candidates will have the opportunity to spend up to one month each year in Los Angeles. The successful candidates will have a background in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science or evolutionary biology.

Students will be affiliated with either the Bioinformatics Institute or the Department of Computer Science depending on their background and preference.

Applications should be sent to Dr Alexei Drummond (alexei@cs.auckland.ac.nz) by 3rd March 2009, and include a CV, and the names of two referees.

PhD Scholarship in Strategy with a Focus on Competition and Accountability in Seaborne Shipping

PhD scholarship in strategy with a focus on competition and accountability in seaborne shipping
The Centre for Shipping Economics and Innovation (CENSEI) at the Department of Innovation and Organizational Economics (INO) and the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy (MPP) invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship in ”Competition and Accountability in the Seaborne Shipping Industry”.

New challenges arising as a result of increasing globalization and a stronger general concern for the impact of sea transports on communities and the environment are prompting shipping companies to reassess and change their community position and accountability. The seaborne shipping industry faces major challenges in terms of pollution and relevant issues in relation to safety at sea and ashore. The question is how these challenges may be translated into concrete requirements for the shipping companies to comply with and how the shipping industry can develop the new skills and competencies necessary to handle these challenges in a long-term strategic perspective.

The project can be carried out at the PhD school of either one of the departments, depending on the relevance to the project (INO is part of the PhD School in Economics and Business Administration and MPP is part of the Doctoral School on Knowledge and Management).

The scholarship is co-funded by DS-Norden and CBS.

As a distinctive research entity at CBS the Centre for Shipping Economics and Innovation focuses broadly on the relationship between shipping industry dynamics and globalization. Within this broad field, the centre carries out research resting on a combination of ‘’shipping economics” and the ”economics of innovation”, the latter as applied to shipping and related industries. ”Shipping economics” refers broadly to economic and comparative-institutional analysis of the functioning and underlying mechanisms of the shipping industry as well as of the internal organization and boundaries of the shipping firm. Thus defined, shipping economics includes (but is not limited to) the study of the industrial organization of shipping; the dynamics of shipping markets; the socio-economic principles of seaborne trade; the global division of labour in seaborne trade; maritime clusters; maritime regulation and policy; the micro-economics of firm decision-making; as well as the strategy, structure and boundaries of the shipping firm. ”Economics of innovation” refers to issues related to innovation and the replication of new products, processes, technologies and organizational forms.

We strongly encourage applicants to focus research design, methodology and theory choice within the core area of the center, as described above.

Closing date: April 1, 2009 at 12.00 noon.

For further information please contact associate professor Martin J. Iversen (mi.lpf@cbs.dk) or associate professor Henrik Sornn-Friese (hsf.ino@cbs.dk). Potential applicants are encouraged to make contact early on before the application deadline in order to formulate an appropriate project description. Applicants may wish to visit the following websites:

- DS-Norden: www.ds-norden.com

- INO: www.cbs.dk/forskning_viden/institutter_centre/institutter/ino

- MPP: www.cbs.dk/mpp

PhD Position, Soil Sciences, Germany

We invite applications for a PhD position within the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft / German Research Foundation) project Influence of tillage practice on infiltration processes in agricultural catchments.
The influence of different tillage operations on runoff formation and runoff concentration will be analysed and physical-based modelled for small catchment areas (lower mesoscale

Scenarios shall be simulated to quantify the effectiveness of tillage and soil coverage on water retention and runoff reduction. Possibilities and limits of flood protection will be analysed. At last test simulations will be realised with larger raster resolution to get an advice if it is possible to regionalize the scientific findings. If these tests are satisfactory, the transfer of processes and simulations to the upper mesoscale (100-1000 km²) will be carried out in a new project.

Job description
The successful candidate will work with the newest water balance model WaSiM-ETH 8.2.9 (see http://www.wasim.ch/en/index.html). The focus of the simulation is the evaluation of sealing processes due to erosive rain events in combination with different tillage operations.

Additionally, two dimensional overland flows will be modelled to fully understand different water pathways including infiltration and return flow. A comparison between conventional and ecological soil cultivation will conclude the research.

The applicant is expected to have a Diplom / M.Sc. in civil / environmental engineering or geographic / soil sciences.
Advanced scientific programming skills (FORTRAN90, MATLAB, UNIX) are expected and the ability to work efficiently in a team is regarded as essential.

The position is offered for 18 months. During this time period a PhD thesis can be completed because essential pre-work (data analysis, build-up of the WaSiM model) has already been done.

Payment is according to TVöD, E13 60% including extensive social security plans. It is possible to start the scientific work with a M.Sc.-Thesis on the basis of a student employment. After examination the position (TVöD, E13 60%) can be continued over the offered period (18 months).

The Universität der Bundeswehr seeks to increase the number of female scientists and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.

All applications (including a cover letter, a curriculum vitae and copies of scientific degrees), received before 1st of March 2009 will be considered. The position is open until filled.
